Alto Saxophone in E flat

The Vincenz Kohlert’s Sohne workshop in Graslitz, Bohemia, was one of the most respected instrument makers in the region. They specialized in woodwind instruments and began producing saxophones in 1900. Prior to World War II, six hundred craftsmen were working at the Graslitz factory. This Alto Saxophone only became part of the collection of the Musikinstrumenten-Museum around 1950. We can speculate that this is a civilian instrument, damaged in unknown circumstances, that found its way to the collection after the end of World War II. The body is bent, and some keys have fallen off. An internal document notes the instrument is “severely damaged, dimensions cannot be determined, probably beyond repair.”

Alto Saxophone in E flat, Brass silvered. Vincenz Kohlert’s Sohne. Inventory number: 4245. Collection: Musikinstrumenten-Museum, Berlin.
